I once heard this, “All a creative director does is add the final 99% to any given project.” This description doesn’t jive with me. Sounds more like a creative dictator than a creative director. And while a CD, GCD, ECD plays a director level role within the organization, I feel that the word director doesn’t always do the position justice.

 

When it comes to creative teams, I prefer to think of myself as more of a creative facilitator.. Helping teams find their way, rather than imposing my creative will. I tell them, “Together, we’ll be opening a lot of doors, taking many paths, and covering a lot of new territory. Most likely, we’re gonna get lost. And that’s ok. If you don’t get a little lost, you’ll never find a new way home.” And that’s a huge part of our job: finding new, unexpected directions that lead to shining solutions. At the end of the day, however, the final decision rests on my shoulders. And I believe in total accountability. The way I see it – creative teams get the recognition, creative directors take the heat.

 

When it comes to clients, I prefer to think of myself as a creative collaborator.  We start with the very simple fact that the client knows their product/service a way that we may never. Let’s make sure we’re harnessing that knowledge. Second, clients are (hopefully) super in-tune with their company’s culture, core values, and purpose. If the work doesn’t properly resonate on that level, then it’s doing your client a disservice. Their gut-check here is invaluable. Finally, speaking of invaluable, the aim should always be to have a highly invested client. Enable them to feel a true sense of ownership over the work (and everything leading up to it). They could very well become your agency’s biggest MVP.

 

When it comes to you? Well, guess I prefer to think of myself as Matt. I think getting to know the person behind the position is always a great place to start. So, outside agency walls, I’m a dad of two delightful daughters. One has found her home on the stage performing musicals. I wholly admire her courage for doing so. There’s not much of a safety net up there. The other has found her place on the field – the softball field. Also, not one to shy away from fear, she’s a pitcher. A pretty damn good one. I’m a coach on her team, her personal pitching coach, and now a fan of fastpitch softball. Those two girls are the reason I’m on this earth. Other than that, I’m a husband, a dog lover, and a boisterous Oregon Duck. Apologies in advance for that.
